I fucked up my Tamiya FJ's paint job. I had finished everything and removed the masking it was perfect. The roof was perfect, the body color was perfect, it was a really good job.

Then I decided to tint the windows and thats when it fell apart.

I started tinting and I then noticed the front window was fogged up. I then noticed the roof was starting to get black patches which I assumed was from the tint spray.

I panicked and decided to wipe the tint off from the front window, it became smudgy and sticky. Then I panicked because the roof was getting messed up so i resprayed the white roof from the inside. Then i noticed that the black patches were my finger print smudges. Then I noticed I got white paint on the front glass. So I got pissed off and started blasting the window with tint spray because it was fucked. Then I spray painted silver behind it. It was terrible!

So I put it upside down and left it pissed off.

A while later I cooled down and figured fuck it, its just the windows. I go back to the shell and realize all the tint spray i had blasted had now fucked up the roof! So I tried to fix it and made it worse. I sprayed more white and it ended up spraying the front window. I then realized I had white paint on the outside body as well!

It was done, it was perfect and in an instant it turned into the worst paint job in Tamiyas history probably.

do they sell something to remove all the paint and then u could just re-paint it? without the tint? if not then just buy another plastic body and paint it.

I am just going to buy a new body but it was a pain cutting the body and prepping it for paint. Can't believe i have to go through all that again. Not only that but it was impossible to find white paint for the roof. Tamiya get their shipment next month and Pro Hobbies had run out. I was lucky enough they had a used bottle lying around which I took. Don't know where I am going to find more white paint...

I may have a can lying around mark, will check and advise you later, and if you need a hand on the paint job just pm me, I airbrush model cars on my free time and can give you some pointers.

Some stuff I did on my free time.

I'll email ultimate racing and ask for some ideas on getting the paint off. Whats your body material made from lexan, I recall Tamiya being plastic an painted from the outside back in the 80's.

... or you can go ahead and use it as it is and call it the Retro FJ from Jahra.

shesha i could try being there around 7:15-7:30. Its a lexan body but i don't think there is a way to remove the paint without effecting the plastic shell. Anyway I will just use this shell as a basher I guess.

Mark:

Get some matte paint, paint over the body.
Knock out the windshield (and frame) and the roof -- so it looks like a classic military Jeep.
Enjoy :)

At least, that's what I would do, not sure how feasible it is.

No
just use it with a piece of cotton, slightly move it over and it will do the rest.

Nail polish remover is pretty toxic stuff, I wouldn't trust it at all on the body, including my own.

I wish. If it was a hard plastic body like my Lunch box the windshield is a separate piece which screws into place. Problem with hard plastic bodies is that they can break.

Lexan is more flexible and absorbs impact and since the paint is on the inside withstand abuse pretty good without showing any signs of damage. Problem is the lexan shell is one transparent piece and you just paint everything around the windows.

I tried nail polish, after 10 minutes I can see a tiny hole in the paint. At the current rate I need 6 years to clear up the windows!

The bad news is, it's really hard to remove the old paint job. What you have to do is to go to Ace, or Tamiya if you want to spend more.. And get your self a Spray Can of Grey (or White) Primer. After priming your entire old paint job/body, start to sand with tiny piece of 600 grit sand paper. Move up to 800 then 1000 and finally 1500 grit. You might to re-spray and re-sand a couple of times.

I tried acetone on the windows, after 10 minutes there was one tiny clear patch. it wasn't working.
I tried thinner, after 2 seconds the paint was going off. After 2 minutes i had cleared the front window but noticed the plastic was developing crystal like cracks.
So i bought glossy black spray paint and sprayed the windows from outside. looks cool. Applying decals now and will take pics and post
